Cycling fans can divide the history of America’s Tour de France into two epochs—the era of LeMond, who won three Tours, and the age of Armstrong, who won seven. Heading into the 2008 Tour, which starts July 5 in Brest, France, a third and equally dramatic American era may be upon us — the age of the Argyle invasion.

When your mind turns to thoughts of dream cycling vacations, likely your fantasy locales tend to be far away and require long plane flights, bike cases, expensive hotel stays and the mastery of another language. Sure, it’s fun to ride gran fondos (great endurance) in Italy, climb the famed peaks of the Tour de France or pedal the cobbled paths and murs of Belgium and France, but get a grip. This is 2008. Not so very long ago, I had the pleasure of visiting the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, Florida. Cyclists all have their own memories and opinions already. You guys don’t need me for that. Instead, I think this month I’ll reach out to those of you who may not already own a bike or even think riding a bike is a good idea. So in honor of June, the sixth month, here are six great reasons to start riding a bike.

I’ve been around the Atlanta triathlon community for a number of years now, and if you asked me about some of the local patriarchs of that sport I would quickly spout off names like Fox Ferrel, Jon Adamson, and “Ageless” Earl Lassiter. But I must admit that I am a little clueless when it comes to knowing Atlanta’s own cycling gurus. With cycling as the June theme of Competitor Southeast, I asked around for some names and there were two that kept surfacing. I contacted these elder statesmen from the Atlanta pedaling community, Tommy Hanks and Ray Miller, and asked them what they thought we should include in this issue.
